Remarkable mind
Vincent van Gogh
Dutch painter and draftsman · 1853–1890
Vincent van Gogh developed a distinctive visual language through sustained observation, drawing and repeated experimentation with colour and brushwork. His career as an artist lasted roughly a decade and included periods in the Netherlands, Paris, Arles, Saint-Rémy and Auvers-sur-Oise. Hundreds of surviving letters, especially those exchanged with his brother Theo, document his working methods, reading, ambitions and doubts. They are also the strongest sources for checking many statements now circulated as Van Gogh quotations.
