Sources & rights

Quote Attribution & Copyright

How quotation sources, disputed wording and reuse should be understood.

Library sources

Quotation text and author names may come from open datasets, public sources and editorial research. The current large dataset is based on the open-source QuoteSlate project and is cached by the website before being delivered to visitors.

Attribution is not certainty

A displayed author name is not a scholarly authenticity guarantee. Quotations may be disputed, translated differently, shortened, paraphrased, incorrectly attributed or missing an original source. Important quotations should be checked against a primary work, transcript, archive or reliable scholarly edition.

Copyright and other rights

Inclusion does not mean that a quotation is in the public domain or free of third-party rights. Copyright, related rights, trademark rights, personality rights or contractual limits may apply. Visitors are responsible for determining whether a planned publication, advertisement, product or commercial reuse is permitted.

Generated images

The image generator creates a visual layout. Creating or downloading an image does not grant a licence to protected quotation text, names, portraits, trademarks or other third-party material.
