“First They Ignore You”: Origin and Gandhi Attribution
No reliable primary source in Gandhi’s collected works verifies the familiar four-part saying. Nicholas Klein used a longer, clearly related sequence in a documented union-convention speech on 15 May 1918. The compact internet wording is a later paraphrase, not an exact quotation from Klein.

Context
What Nicholas Klein actually said
Klein described how a labor movement is first ignored, then ridiculed, then attacked and eventually commemorated. His final image was that monuments would be built to the movement. Later versions compressed the sequence into “then you win” and attached Gandhi’s name, but the evidence does not establish Gandhi as the speaker or Klein as the author of the exact modern sentence.
Attribution note
Credit the popular sentence as “Often attributed to Mahatma Gandhi; no verified Gandhi source located.” When quoting Nicholas Klein, preserve his longer 1918 wording and cite the convention proceedings rather than presenting the modern compact version as verbatim.
